Carmen Kaufmann

Carmen Kaufmann
Nutritionist, Therapist, Trainer  (Just call me COACH!)

I have over 20 years experience working specifically and directly with clients suffering from disordered eating issues.

I have worked at all levels of care from hospitals to outpatient health care settings. I was the primary therapist for the child and youth eating disorders program for the South Fraser Region for close to a decade before turning to private practice on the North Shore.

I have also acted in several supervisory, educational and consultative roles in training University students and other professionals about the treatment of this illness. I am currently contracted by the Committee of “Jessie’s Legacy” in order to promote education, understanding and prevention of Eating Disorders within our communities. I also serve as an Ambassador for the North Vancouver Foundry which addresses issues of mental health and addictions in youth.

I created Weigh of Life Wellness Studio to address the gaps in service for people suffering with disordered eating. Research shows that if counseling, nutrition, and personal exercise programming are put together in a treatment plan, the likelihood of recovery from disordered eating is extremely favorable. I believe full recovery is possible but early intervention is KEY. Please do not wait any longer to get the help and information you need.

I personally have experienced living with a severe eating disorder and I can tell you that recovery is absolutely possible. I believe that my personal experience has given me an incredible passion and a deep understanding for those suffering with these illnesses. You are worth it, let me help......

Anne Merrett-hiley

Anne Merrett-hiley
The Fat Therapist, MSW, RSW

My particular area of focus is binge eating disorder and my personal and professional philosophy is one of HEALTH AT EVERY SIZE.

As a therapist I consider myself a guide. I trust that people have the intuition and wisdom to be able to come to a place of acceptance and self compassion regardless of their shape or size. I also believe that it is so important we talk explicitly about our experiences in a world that has a limited view of how a woman (and increasingly how a man) should look and so I share a bit about the experience of my own journey.

My earliest memories are of liking my body…it let me swim, play, move and most importantly have fun. I never thought about something being wrong with my body until I was put on my first diet when I was 8 or 9. I had seen my doctor who expressed concern to my mother that I was much larger than my peers. This led to many years of struggling with my weight, yo-yo dieting and both body and self hatred. I believed that there was something wrong with my body that needed to be fixed and that I was not acceptable because I was not thin.

When I entered university I discovered Women’s Studies and Feminism. Women reclaiming their bodies and accepting their size no matter what…it was as if I had died and gone to heaven. Over the next 10 years I read voraciously on body image, media and weight. I slowly came to a place of accepting my body as it is…fat. I take care of it, move it and treat it well. I am happy, healthy and loved and am proud to model the acceptance of bodily diversity in my acceptance of my own body.

Bella

Bella
The Resident Bully

She is the REAL boss around here.

She keeps Carmen and Anne in line, clients smiling and reassured, and the mailman at bay. She spends her days in equal thirds: Sleep, snort, fart. She is very good at her job – and excels at the latter consistently.

She responds favorably to biscuits and belly rubs. And unapologetically admits that her love can be bought.
